Trusting God with What We Cannot Understand

A Devotional on Romans 8:28 for October 17, 2026

“And we know that God works all things together for the good of those who love Him, who are called according to His purpose.” — Romans 8:28

Some seasons of life leave more questions than answers. Plans fall apart, prayers seem unanswered, and circumstances unfold in ways that bring sorrow rather than relief. In those moments, Romans 8:28 offers a promise strong enough to hold our uncertainty: God is still at work.

This verse does not say that everything that happens is good. Loss is painful. Injustice is wrong. Disappointment can wound deeply. God does not ask His children to pretend otherwise. The surrounding passage speaks openly about suffering, groaning, and weakness. His promise meets us in that reality, assuring us that even what grieves us cannot place us beyond His redeeming care.

The foundation of our confidence is God Himself. We cannot always see how the pieces of our lives fit together, but we can trust the One who holds them. His wisdom reaches beyond our understanding, and His faithfulness does not depend on our ability to recognize what He is doing.

The next verse helps explain the good toward which God works: becoming conformed to the image of His Son. His purpose reaches deeper than comfortable circumstances or fulfilled expectations. He is shaping His people to reflect Jesus—in love, patience, holiness, and trust. Sometimes that growth takes place through blessings gladly received. Sometimes it develops through trials we would never have chosen.

This does not mean every sorrow will receive a clear explanation in this life. Some questions remain unanswered. Yet an unanswered question is not evidence of an absent God. At the cross, human cruelty and profound suffering became the setting for God’s saving work. Through Christ’s resurrection, we see that suffering and death do not have the final word.

Today, bring God the circumstance you cannot understand. Tell Him honestly where it hurts. Ask for the grace to take the next faithful step: to pray, to seek support, to serve someone, or to obey what He has already made clear. You do not have to understand His entire purpose to trust His care today.

Your hope rests in the God who has called you through Christ and remains faithful to His purpose. Even here, even now, your life is held in His hands.

Heavenly Father, help us trust You when we cannot understand our circumstances. Meet us in our sorrow, strengthen us in our weakness, and shape us into the likeness of Jesus. Give us courage to obey You today and patience to leave unanswered questions in Your care. Thank You that nothing can defeat Your good purpose for those who belong to You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
