A Devotional for October 3, 2026
There are moments when failure makes us wonder whether God still wants us near. We remember the wrong decisions, the neglected prayers, and the times we trusted our own judgment more than His Word. Into that uncertainty, 1 Samuel 12:22 speaks a reassuring promise: “The LORD will not abandon His people.”
Samuel spoke these words to Israel after confronting them with their sin in asking for a king. Their failure was real, and repentance was necessary. Yet God’s faithfulness had not come to an end. Samuel urged them to keep following the Lord and serve Him with all their hearts. Their guilt was a reason to return to God, never a reason to run from Him.
The foundation of this promise rests in God’s character: “for the sake of His great name.” His name represents His holiness, mercy, and steadfast love. His people could depend on Him because He remains true to who He is. Even the words “He was pleased to make you His own” reveal the grace behind their belonging. God had freely chosen to draw them into a relationship with Himself.
For those who belong to Christ, this truth offers courage to come honestly before God. His faithful love does not make sin unimportant; it makes repentance possible without despair. We can confess our failures, receive His forgiveness, and take the next step of obedience.
Today, let God’s faithfulness steady your heart. Bring Him what needs to change. Trust Him with what you cannot control. You do not have to earn His attention through flawless performance. The God who calls His people to faithfulness is Himself faithful.
Lord, thank You for Your steadfast love. Help us turn from sin, trust Your character, and serve You with willing hearts. When fear tells us we are forgotten, remind us that we belong to You. Amen.
