When clouds arise and shadows fall,
And thunder shakes the trembling wall,
When troubled winds around us sweep,
And sorrow wakes while others sleep,
There stands a refuge, sure and strong,
A shelter when the night is long.
The Lord is good when skies are fair,
And good when grief is everywhere;
His goodness does not fade away
When darkness overtakes the day.
No storm can change His faithful heart,
Nor cause His steadfast love to part.
When roads grow hard beneath our feet,
And trials rise that we must meet,
He does not watch from heights afar,
But meets us where our sorrows are.
Within the tempest, fierce and wild,
He keeps the soul that trusts Him mild.
A stronghold stands when walls give way,
A fortress through the darkest day;
Not built of stone that time can break,
Nor guarded strength that fear can shake,
But founded on the Lord alone,
Whose faithful mercy guards His own.
Run, weary heart, beneath His wing;
To Him your hidden burdens bring.
The God who rules the wind and sea
Is still the God who shelters thee.
Though trouble comes with sudden might,
His presence is thy guarded light.
He knows the ones who trust His name;
He knows their sorrow, fear, and shame.
No faithful tear escapes His sight,
No whispered prayer is lost at night.
Before the trembling lips can speak,
He knows the refuge that they seek.
To be known by God is more than rest;
It is to dwell within His breast,
To know the Shepherd knows His sheep,
And through the darkest valley deep
Will walk beside them, staff in hand,
And lead them toward the promised land.
The world may build its towers high,
And trust in strength beneath the sky;
Yet every fortress made by men
Will bow to dust and fall again.
But those who make the Lord their stay
Possess a Rock that cannot sway.
When fear declares that hope is gone,
His mercy whispers, “Journey on.”
When grief insists the night will stay,
His goodness promises the day.
And even when no dawn appears,
His presence stands beyond our fears.
O soul, remember in distress:
The Lord has not become faithless.
The God who sheltered saints of old
Has neither weakened nor grown cold.
His ancient mercy still remains;
His faithful hand still breaks our chains.
He is our refuge in the storm,
Our shelter when the tempests form,
Our hiding place when troubles rise,
Our steady hope beneath dark skies.
And those who trust His gracious care
Will find that He is waiting there.
Not merely when the battle ends,
Not only when the daylight bends
Across a peaceful, quiet land,
But in the storm He takes our hand.
Amid the thunder, wind, and flame,
Our stronghold bears a holy Name.
So let the troubled heart draw near
To Him who stands above all fear.
Let faith beneath His mercy hide,
And in His steadfast love abide.
For through the darkest day we know:
His goodness is our place to go.
The Lord is good; let heaven proclaim
The endless glory of His name.
A stronghold when distress is near,
A refuge stronger than our fear.
And blessed are all those who rest
Within His faithful tenderness.
Though mountains shake and kingdoms fall,
His goodness shall outlast them all.
Though night descend and storms increase,
His presence guards the soul with peace.
For those who trust Him shall discover:
The God who knows them is their cover.
And when at last the clouds depart,
And morning warms the weary heart,
The rescued soul shall turn and see
How faithful God has proved to be.
Through every storm, His love remained—
A fortress standing in the rain.
