The Lord Is Good

A Morning Prayer of Refuge and Trust Inspired by Nahum 1:7

Gracious and eternal Father, as this new day begins, we come before You with hearts that need Your presence more than we need anything this world can offer. Before the demands of the day gather around us, before responsibilities call our names, before conversations begin and decisions must be made, we turn our attention toward You. You are already here. You have watched through the night, sustained our lives, and brought us into the mercy of another morning. The rising of the sun does not awaken You, for You neither slumber nor sleep. You are the everlasting God, faithful from generation to generation, and we begin this day resting in the truth declared through Your prophet: “The LORD is good, a stronghold in the day of distress; He cares for those who trust in Him.”

Lord, You are good.

Your goodness is not merely something You occasionally demonstrate. Goodness belongs to Your very nature. Everything that is truly good finds its source in You. Your goodness does not depend upon the circumstances surrounding us, and it does not disappear when life becomes difficult. You remain good when the path is clear and when the road ahead is hidden. You remain good when prayers are answered quickly and when we must wait. You remain good in seasons of abundance and in seasons when resources seem scarce. You remain good when our hearts are filled with joy and when sorrow settles heavily upon us.

Teach us this morning to build our understanding of life upon Your character rather than upon our circumstances.

We confess that it is easy to interpret Your goodness through the changing experiences of our lives. When things go according to our plans, we quickly say that You are good. When plans collapse, doors close, relationships become strained, sickness comes, uncertainty increases, or burdens grow heavy, we can begin to wonder where Your goodness has gone.

But Your Word calls us deeper.

Your goodness is not proved by the absence of trouble. Your goodness is revealed in the fact that even in trouble, You remain our God.

Nahum spoke of Your goodness in the shadow of judgment, conflict, fear, and uncertainty. The world surrounding him was not peaceful, yet he could declare that the Lord is good. The circumstances were unstable, but Your character was not. Nations could rise and fall, armies could advance, human power could threaten, and earthly security could disappear, but none of these things could alter who You are.

Give us that same confidence today.

Whatever this day contains, anchor our hearts in Your goodness.

If unexpected difficulties arise, remind us that You are good.

If someone disappoints us, remind us that You are good.

If circumstances change suddenly, remind us that You are good.

If the answer we hoped for does not come, remind us that You are good.

If the day brings laughter, let us praise You for Your goodness.

If the day brings tears, let us cling to Your goodness.

If the day brings success, keep us humble before Your goodness.

If the day brings failure, keep us secure within Your goodness.

Father, Your Word also declares that You are a stronghold in the day of distress.

How deeply we need this truth.

We often search for strongholds of our own making. We place confidence in financial security, personal ability, careful planning, relationships, institutions, possessions, reputation, knowledge, and human strength. These things may have their proper place, but none of them can bear the full weight of our trust.

Everything created has limits.

You alone are without limit.

Everything earthly can change.

You remain forever.

Everything human can fail.

You are eternally faithful.

Therefore, Lord, become the stronghold of our hearts today.

When anxiety begins whispering about everything that might go wrong, draw us into the shelter of Your presence. When fear exaggerates tomorrow's possibilities, bring our attention back to Your faithfulness today. When circumstances seem larger than our strength, remind us that our security has never depended upon our strength.

You are our stronghold.

A stronghold is a place of protection when danger comes. It is a place where frightened people find security beyond their own ability to defend themselves. And this morning we acknowledge that we cannot protect ourselves from every difficulty, control every circumstance, anticipate every problem, or guarantee every outcome.

We are not sovereign.

You are.

We are not all-knowing.

You are.

We cannot see around every corner.

You already stand beyond every corner.

We do not know everything this day will bring, but nothing this day brings will surprise You.

What comforts us is not the illusion that we can control today. What comforts us is the certainty that today belongs to You.

Go before us, Lord.

Go before us into every conversation.

Go before us into every workplace.

Go before us into every classroom.

Go before us into every home.

Go before us into every appointment.

Go before us into every decision.

Go before us into every unexpected interruption.

Prepare the way where we cannot see the way.

Give wisdom where decisions are complicated. Give patience where circumstances are frustrating. Give gentleness where relationships are strained. Give courage where truth must be spoken. Give humility where correction must be received. Give compassion where another person is hurting. Give discernment where appearances are misleading. Give perseverance where responsibilities become exhausting.

And when distress comes, teach us not merely to ask You to remove it but also to discover You as our stronghold within it.

There are difficulties You prevent, and we thank You for mercies we may never recognize.

There are difficulties You remove, and we praise You for deliverance.

There are difficulties You allow us to walk through, and in those places teach us the deeper mystery of Your sustaining grace.

Do not allow hardship to convince us that You have abandoned us. Let hardship drive us nearer to You.

May every storm teach us where the true shelter is.

May every weakness remind us where true strength is found.

May every uncertainty teach us where true security rests.

May every burden draw us toward the One who is able to carry what we cannot.

Father, Your Word says that You care for those who trust in You.

What a beautiful truth this is.

You do not merely rule creation from a distance. You know those who seek refuge in You. You know their names, their needs, their fears, their hopes, their wounds, their prayers, and their hidden struggles.

Nothing about our lives is insignificant to You.

You know the burdens we speak about openly, and You know the burdens we have told no one.

You know the questions that remain unanswered.

You know the concerns we carry for people we love.

You know the places where we feel strong and the places where we are barely holding together.

You know the memories that still hurt.

You know the responsibilities waiting for us today.

You know the temptations we may encounter.

You know the opportunities that will appear.

You know the people whose paths will cross ours.

You know everything.

Yet Your knowledge is not cold or distant. You know us with the knowledge of a loving Father. You care for those who trust in You.

Help us understand that trusting You is more than believing that You exist. Trust means placing the weight of our lives upon Your faithfulness.

Teach us to trust You with what we understand and what we do not understand.

Teach us to trust You with what we can change and what we cannot change.

Teach us to trust You with our families.

Teach us to trust You with our work.

Teach us to trust You with our resources.

Teach us to trust You with our future.

Teach us to trust You with unanswered prayer.

Teach us to trust You when obedience is costly.

Teach us to trust You when waiting becomes difficult.

Teach us to trust You when Your timing differs from ours.

Teach us to trust You when the road You choose is not the road we would have chosen.

Deliver us from the exhausting belief that everything depends upon us.

We want to work faithfully without living anxiously. We want to plan wisely without pretending that we control tomorrow. We want to accept responsibility without carrying burdens You never asked us to carry.

Give us open hands this morning.

We surrender our schedules to You.

We surrender our expectations to You.

We surrender our ambitions to You.

We surrender our worries to You.

We surrender our relationships to You.

We surrender our unfinished work to You.

We surrender our unanswered questions to You.

We surrender this entire day to You.

Let Your will become more precious to us than our plans.

Lord Jesus Christ, we thank You that the goodness of God has come near to us through You. In You we see the Father's heart revealed. You entered our broken world, shared our humanity, carried our sorrows, confronted evil, welcomed sinners, touched the suffering, restored the broken, and proclaimed the kingdom of God.

Above all, You went to the cross.

There we see that divine goodness is not shallow optimism. Your goodness enters the deepest darkness and overcomes it through self-giving love.

At the cross, sin was confronted.

At the cross, mercy was revealed.

At the cross, judgment and grace met.

At the cross, the love of God was displayed in its astonishing depth.

And through Your resurrection, death itself was defeated.

Therefore our refuge is not merely an emotional feeling that everything will somehow work out. Our refuge is the crucified and risen Christ.

Because You live, hope is stronger than despair.

Because You live, grace is greater than sin.

Because You live, death does not have the final word.

Because You live, those who belong to You can face an uncertain day with certain hope.

Jesus, lead us today.

Let Your words shape our words.

Let Your compassion shape our responses.

Let Your humility shape our attitudes.

Let Your courage shape our obedience.

Let Your patience shape our relationships.

Let Your holiness shape our choices.

Let Your love become visible through the ordinary details of our lives.

Holy Spirit, fill us afresh for this day.

Where fear seeks entrance, cultivate faith.

Where irritation begins to rise, produce patience.

Where selfishness seeks control, produce love.

Where temptation whispers, strengthen obedience.

Where confusion clouds our thinking, give wisdom.

Where discouragement drains our strength, renew our hope.

Where pride seeks recognition, form humility.

Where bitterness tries to take root, lead us toward forgiveness.

Where hurriedness makes us careless with people, slow our hearts enough to notice those around us.

Make us attentive today.

Help us notice the lonely person.

Help us hear the unspoken pain behind someone's words.

Help us recognize opportunities to encourage.

Help us become generous with kindness.

Help us speak words that heal rather than wound.

Help us refuse gossip, resentment, cruelty, and unnecessary conflict.

Guard our mouths before we speak.

Guard our minds before thoughts become attitudes.

Guard our hearts before disappointments become bitterness.

Guard our actions so that what we do reflects the character of Christ.

May our lives quietly testify that the Lord is good.

Father, we pray for those who awaken this morning already facing a day of distress.

Be the stronghold of those who are grieving.

Be the stronghold of those waiting for medical answers.

Be the stronghold of those facing financial uncertainty.

Be the stronghold of those whose marriages are struggling.

Be the stronghold of parents worried about their children.

Be the stronghold of children living in difficult homes.

Be the stronghold of those who feel lonely.

Be the stronghold of those facing difficult decisions.

Be the stronghold of those carrying responsibilities that seem too heavy.

Be the stronghold of those who are persecuted because they belong to Christ.

Be the stronghold of pastors, missionaries, caregivers, counselors, teachers, first responders, and all who spend their lives serving others.

Let those who feel forgotten discover that they are known by You.

Let those who feel abandoned discover Your presence.

Let those who are exhausted discover Your strength.

Let those who are afraid discover Your peace.

Let those who have lost hope discover again that Your mercy has not been exhausted.

We pray also for those who do not yet know You as their refuge. Draw them toward Yourself. Break through false ideas about who You are. Let them encounter the goodness revealed in Jesus Christ. Bring them from fear into faith, from isolation into fellowship, from guilt into grace, and from spiritual death into the life that comes through Christ.

And Father, as we move into this day, keep us from rushing past You.

May prayer not end when we rise from this moment.

Teach us to carry awareness of Your presence throughout the day.

When we drive, remind us that You are near.

When we work, remind us that You are near.

When we speak with others, remind us that You are near.

When we eat, remind us that every provision comes ultimately from Your hand.

When problems arise, remind us that You are near.

When good news comes, remind us to give thanks.

When the day becomes busy, remind us that our souls were not created to live apart from communion with You.

Let this day become an act of worship.

May ordinary work be offered to You.

May unnoticed kindness be offered to You.

May difficult obedience be offered to You.

May patient endurance be offered to You.

May generosity be offered to You.

May forgiveness be offered to You.

May our words, decisions, attitudes, and actions become offerings of gratitude to the God who has given us life.

And when this day eventually draws toward evening, may we be able to look back and recognize traces of Your faithfulness everywhere.

Perhaps some prayers will be answered.

Perhaps some problems will remain.

Perhaps unexpected blessings will come.

Perhaps unexpected difficulties will arise.

Whatever happens, let one truth remain deeply rooted within us:

The Lord is good.

You are good before the trouble comes.

You are good while the trouble remains.

You are good when deliverance arrives.

You are our stronghold in the day of distress.

You know those who trust in You.

You know us completely, love us faithfully, hold us securely, guide us wisely, correct us lovingly, sustain us graciously, and lead us toward the fulfillment of Your kingdom.

Therefore we will not begin this day dominated by fear.

We begin it with trust.

We will not walk into this day believing that we are alone.

We walk with the God who is our refuge.

We will not measure Your goodness by everything that happens today.

We will interpret everything that happens today through the unchanging truth of who You are.

You are good.

You are faithful.

You are holy.

You are merciful.

You are sovereign.

You are near.

You are our stronghold.

And You care for those who trust in You.

So we place this morning, this day, our lives, and everything we love into Your faithful hands.

Lead us.

Protect us.

Correct us.

Strengthen us.

Use us.

Keep us near to Christ.

And through everything this day may bring, teach us to live as people who have found their refuge in You.

In the name of Jesus Christ, our Savior, our Shepherd, our refuge, and our everlasting hope, we pray.
