The Song of God’s Delight

A Poem Inspired by Zephaniah 3:17

When shadows fall upon the land,
And weary hearts grow faint with fear,
The Lord remains with mighty hand,
The saving God is ever near.

He dwells among His chosen own,
No distant King beyond the skies;
His mercy makes the heart His throne,
His faithful love before us lies.

The storms may gather, fierce and deep,
The night may stretch from shore to shore;
Yet He who neither faints nor sleeps
Remains our refuge evermore.

For mighty is the Lord to save,
His strength no enemy can bind;
His grace reaches beyond the grave,
His mercy seeks the lost to find.

He gathers those whose hearts are torn,
He lifts the ones whom sorrow bends;
He brings new hope where grief was born,
And stays beside us as a Friend.

Yet greater still the wonder grows:
The Holy One delights in grace.
His joy like living water flows
Around the people He embraces.

The God who fashioned stars above,
Who taught the morning how to rise,
Looks on His own with steadfast love
And sees them precious in His eyes.

He does not merely tolerate
The souls His mercy has restored;
He welcomes them within His gates,
Beloved and treasured by the Lord.

He rejoices over those He saves,
Not coldly, silently, afar;
His gladness rolls like shining waves
Beneath the everlasting stars.

And when the troubled spirit cries,
When words are lost beneath the pain,
His quiet love begins to rise
Like gentle sunlight after rain.

He quiets fear with tenderness,
He stills the restless, wounded heart;
His presence brings a holy rest
No earthly power can impart.

Be still beneath His faithful care,
O soul exhausted by the fight;
The God who hears your whispered prayer
Surrounds your darkness with His light.

No accusation need remain
Where mercy speaks the final word;
No past can make His promise vain
When grace and truth from Him are heard.

The Lord is near, the Lord is strong,
The Lord is faithful through the years;
And over us He lifts a song
More powerful than all our fears.

What mystery of boundless grace:
The God whom heaven cannot contain
Draws near to every broken place
And sings where sorrow once had reigned.

His song is stronger than the night,
His love more lasting than the grave;
His presence turns our fear to light,
For mighty is the Lord to save.

So let the weary heart arise,
Let hope awaken with the dawn;
The King who reigns beyond the skies
Has not forgotten His beloved ones.

When earthly songs have lost their sound,
When human voices fade away,
The song of God shall still surround
His people through eternal day.

And there, beneath His gracious gaze,
Where every tear has passed from sight,
The redeemed shall answer Him with praise,
And dwell forever in His delight.

For He is near, and He is strong;
His covenant mercy shall not cease.
He quiets us with faithful love
And wraps the trembling heart in peace.

The Lord our God is in our midst,
The mighty Savior, ever true;
And heaven itself bears witness:
With singing He rejoices over you.
