A Message to Young People from Philippians 3:20
“But our citizenship is in heaven, and we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ.” — Philippians 3:20 (BSB)
The world is constantly asking one question of every young person: “Who are you?”
It asks through social media, through music, through advertising, through entertainment, through schools, through friendships, and through culture. Every day voices compete for your attention, telling you to define yourself by your appearance, your achievements, your popularity, your talents, your political views, your possessions, or your personal desires. They promise that if you can discover your identity within yourself or earn the approval of others, then you will finally find happiness.
Yet the more people chase those things, the more restless they often become.
God speaks a completely different message. He does not begin by asking you to invent an identity. He tells you an identity that He Himself gives. Writing to believers in Philippi, the apostle Paul declares, “But our citizenship is in heaven, and we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ.”
These words were especially meaningful to the Philippians because Philippi was a Roman colony. Many who lived there were proud to be Roman citizens. Roman citizenship brought honor, protection, opportunity, and privilege. Even though Rome was many miles away, its citizens lived according to Roman customs and recognized the authority of the emperor.
Paul takes that familiar idea and lifts it to an infinitely greater reality. Christians belong to a greater kingdom than any earthly nation. Their ultimate King is not an earthly ruler but Jesus Christ. Their greatest loyalty belongs not to temporary kingdoms but to the everlasting Kingdom of God.
This truth is just as important today as it was in the first century.
If you belong to Jesus Christ, your deepest identity is not found in your nationality, your school, your family name, your athletic team, your academic success, your online profile, or your future career. Those things may all have value, but none of them defines who you are at the deepest level.
Your citizenship is in heaven.
This changes everything.
Citizenship is about belonging.
Every human heart longs to belong somewhere. Young people especially feel this desire. There is a deep longing to be accepted, valued, included, and loved. Sometimes this leads people to healthy friendships. Sometimes it leads them into destructive relationships simply because they fear being alone.
Many teenagers and young adults compromise their convictions because they desperately want acceptance. They laugh at jokes they know are wrong. They participate in activities that violate their conscience. They hide their faith because they fear rejection. They adopt opinions simply because everyone else seems to hold them.
The desire to belong is powerful.
God understands this longing because He created it. But He also directs it toward its proper fulfillment.
Before you belong anywhere else, you belong to Him.
Through faith in Jesus Christ, you become part of God's family. You are welcomed into His kingdom. You are adopted as His child. Your value is no longer measured by the opinions of classmates, teammates, coworkers, or strangers online. Your worth rests securely in the love of God demonstrated through Jesus Christ.
The cross forever declares your value.
Jesus did not die because humanity was impressive. He died because His love is immeasurable. His sacrifice reveals both the seriousness of sin and the greatness of divine mercy.
When your heart understands this, you become less dependent upon human approval because you already possess the greatest approval imaginable—the love of your heavenly Father.
Heavenly citizens live differently.
Every nation has its customs, values, and laws. Citizens are expected to reflect the character of their homeland.
The same is true spiritually.
Because Christians belong to heaven, heaven begins shaping how they live on earth.
This does not mean Christians become strange or disconnected from everyday life. It means their priorities become different.
While the world says, "Put yourself first," Christ teaches, "Love your neighbor."
While the world celebrates revenge, Christ teaches forgiveness.
While the world glorifies pride, Christ blesses humility.
While the world encourages selfish ambition, Christ calls His followers to serve.
While the world often rewards dishonesty if it produces success, God delights in truth.
The values of heaven frequently stand in sharp contrast to the values of earth.
Young believers should not be surprised when following Jesus feels different from following the crowd.
It should feel different.
If your citizenship is in heaven, your lifestyle should increasingly reflect your heavenly King.
This does not happen perfectly overnight. Spiritual growth is a lifelong journey. God patiently shapes His children through His Word, His Spirit, prayer, worship, fellowship, and countless daily opportunities to obey Him.
Each act of obedience is another reminder that you belong to a different kingdom.
Citizenship shapes your choices.
Every day presents countless decisions.
How will you speak?
How will you treat people?
What will you watch?
What will you listen to?
How will you use your time?
How will you respond when no one else is watching?
Will you choose honesty when lying would be easier?
Will you remain sexually pure when culture mocks biblical standards?
Will you show kindness when others are cruel?
Will you stand for truth even if you stand alone?
These decisions may seem small in the moment, but together they shape the direction of your life.
Paul is reminding believers that every choice should flow from their heavenly identity.
You do not obey Christ in order to earn citizenship.
You obey because citizenship has already been given through His grace.
This is the beautiful order of the gospel.
Religion often says, "Behave well enough, and perhaps you will be accepted."
The gospel says, "Because Christ has accepted you through faith, now live in a way that reflects who you have become."
Grace changes motivation.
Instead of obeying out of fear, Christians obey out of love.
Instead of pursuing holiness to impress God, they pursue holiness because they already know Him.
Instead of trying to earn salvation, they live thankfully because salvation has been freely given through Jesus Christ.
Citizenship provides hope during hardship.
Life is not always easy.
Many young people carry burdens that others never see.
Some struggle with loneliness.
Others battle anxiety.
Some experience broken families.
Others endure bullying.
Some wrestle with temptation.
Others question whether anyone truly understands them.
The Christian life does not remove every hardship.
Jesus Himself warned His followers that they would face trials.
But heavenly citizenship changes how suffering is understood.
This world is not your final home.
Pain will not have the final word.
Disappointment will not last forever.
Death itself has been defeated through the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Because Christ lives, His people possess an unshakable hope that reaches beyond every earthly sorrow.
This hope does not ignore present suffering.
It gives suffering a future.
The Christian can endure today's trials because tomorrow belongs to Christ.
This confidence sustained believers throughout history.
It strengthened martyrs.
It encouraged missionaries.
It comforted prisoners.
It gave courage to ordinary Christians facing extraordinary difficulties.
The same hope remains available today.
Your circumstances may change unexpectedly, but your citizenship never changes.
Earthly identities can disappear.
Schools end.
Jobs change.
Friendships sometimes fade.
Popularity rises and falls.
Athletic careers conclude.
Physical beauty changes.
Financial security can vanish.
Even nations rise and fall throughout history.
But the Kingdom of God remains forever.
Its King never changes.
Its promises never fail.
Its future is absolutely certain.
Citizens eagerly await their King.
Paul says believers "eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ."
Christian hope is not centered upon escaping earth.
It is centered upon welcoming Jesus.
The Christian faith looks forward to a Person.
Jesus will return.
The One who was born in Bethlehem, who walked the roads of Galilee, who healed the sick, who welcomed children, who died on the cross, who rose from the grave, and who ascended into heaven will come again.
This promise has encouraged Christians for centuries.
The return of Christ means justice will finally prevail.
Sin will be defeated.
Death will be destroyed.
Creation will be renewed.
God will dwell fully with His people.
Every tear will be wiped away.
Every broken thing will ultimately be restored according to His perfect purposes.
Young believers should not view Christ's return as something frightening if they belong to Him.
It is the joyful reunion between a King and His people.
This expectation transforms everyday life.
Knowing Christ may return today encourages holiness today.
It encourages faithfulness today.
It encourages courage today.
It encourages perseverance today.
The future changes the present.
Citizens represent their homeland.
Imagine an ambassador living in another country.
Everything about that ambassador reflects the nation he represents.
His words matter.
His actions matter.
His character matters.
People form impressions about his homeland by watching him.
Christians function similarly in this world.
People often learn about Jesus by observing those who claim to follow Him.
Your classmates may never read the Bible.
But they will read your life.
Your coworkers will notice your integrity.
Your friends will observe your compassion.
Your family will see whether your faith is genuine.
The world is watching.
Not because Christians are perfect, but because they represent Christ.
When believers fail, they confess their sin.
When they fall, they seek forgiveness.
When they are weak, they depend upon God's grace.
Authentic Christianity is not pretending to have everything together.
It is honestly following Jesus while continually relying upon His mercy.
Do not be ashamed of your citizenship.
Paul wrote elsewhere that he was not ashamed of the gospel because it is the power of God for salvation.
Young believers sometimes hide their faith because they fear rejection.
That fear is understandable.
Standing apart from the crowd can be difficult.
Yet remember whose approval truly matters.
Jesus never promised that following Him would always be popular.
In fact, He often warned that faithfulness would sometimes invite opposition.
But He also promised His presence.
You are never alone when you stand with Christ.
The same Holy Spirit who strengthened the apostles strengthens believers today.
The same Savior who sustained the early church continues sustaining His people.
The same God who remained faithful throughout Scripture remains faithful today.
Therefore, do not allow fear to silence your witness.
Speak with gentleness.
Live with humility.
Love sincerely.
Stand courageously.
Trust completely.
Citizenship changes your future.
Many young people spend considerable time thinking about the future.
What career should be pursued?
Where should life lead?
Whom should one marry?
Where should one live?
These are important questions.
Scripture never discourages wise planning.
Yet beneath every earthly plan lies an even greater certainty.
Your eternal future is secure in Christ.
Because Jesus conquered sin and death, those who trust Him possess everlasting life.
This certainty frees believers from despair.
Even when earthly dreams change, God's eternal purpose remains.
Even when unexpected disappointments arise, heaven remains certain.
Even when life takes surprising turns, Christ continues leading His people.
The safest future is always found in following Jesus.
Perhaps you do not yet know Christ personally.
Maybe you admire His teachings but have never surrendered your life to Him.
Perhaps you have attended church for years without placing your faith in Him.
The invitation of the gospel remains wonderfully open.
Jesus welcomes sinners.
He forgives those who repent.
He receives everyone who comes to Him in faith.
No past failure is greater than His grace.
No sin is stronger than His mercy.
No broken life is beyond His power to restore.
The citizenship Paul describes is not earned through good behavior.
It is received through faith in Jesus Christ.
He alone opens the gates of God's Kingdom.
He alone reconciles sinners to God.
He alone provides forgiveness through His cross.
He alone conquered death through His resurrection.
He alone is worthy of complete trust.
Young friends, your generation is searching desperately for identity, purpose, belonging, and hope. Many voices promise fulfillment, yet only Christ offers what the human heart was created to receive.
If your citizenship is in heaven, then let heaven shape your heart before earth shapes your opinions. Let Christ define your identity before culture defines your value. Let Scripture guide your thinking before social media tells you what to believe. Let eternal truth become stronger than temporary trends.
Remember each day that you belong to a kingdom that cannot be shaken. You serve a King who cannot fail. You possess a hope that cannot perish. You have a future that cannot be stolen. Your name is known by the Savior who loved you enough to give His life for you.
Live with courage because your King reigns.
Live with purity because your King is holy.
Live with compassion because your King is merciful.
Live with humility because your King served others.
Live with hope because your King is coming again.
The world around you will continue to change. Ideas will come and go. Cultures will rise and fall. Technologies will advance. Opinions will shift. But Jesus Christ remains the same yesterday, today, and forever.
Never forget where your true home is.
Your citizenship is in heaven.
Therefore, live on earth in such a way that others catch a glimpse of the beauty, holiness, love, and glory of the King you eagerly await. Let your life point beyond yourself to Jesus Christ, until the day faith becomes sight and every citizen of heaven joyfully welcomes the returning Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.
